Fronton is a small community on the Rio Grande, about five miles west of Roma on FM 650, and roughly 25 minutes from our base in Rio Grande City. The 2020 census counted 172 residents in the Fronton CDP. What sets it apart for air conditioning is the water: homes sit close to the river, the air stays humid through much of the year, and that moisture ends up in drain lines, pans and the blower wheels of ductless units. Most calls we get from river-edge houses like these trace back to that.

Low river ground, damp air and slow-draining condensate

Every AC system is a dehumidifier as well as a cooler. On a muggy day near the river, a single system can pull gallons of water from indoor air, and all of it has to leave through a small PVC drain. Warm, wet and dark, that pipe is ideal for algae. When it clogs, water backs up into the pan, ceiling or closet floor. Ductless heads have the same problem in a smaller space: slime builds on the coil and the barrel-shaped blower wheel, airflow drops and a musty smell starts.

As in much of western Starr County, many homes here cool with a mix of window units and mini-splits rather than one central system. Outdoor parts take a beating too, because humidity speeds up rust on contactor points and fan motor bearings.

Water also comes from below. Hurricane Alex's remnants pushed Falcon Reservoir well above its conservation level in July 2010, and weather service flood reports list the riverside settlements between Falcon Heights and Roma, Fronton's stretch of river, among those swamped by the dam's releases. A condenser that sat in floodwater, or a disconnect that got wet, needs a full electrical check before anyone flips the breaker back on. The Handbook of Texas also describes irrigated fields around the town, and a dry, windy week on farm ground puts fine dust into condenser fins, where it mixes with river moisture into a paste that a simple hose rinse will not shift.

Fronton history: La Hacha, irrigation and Fronton Island

The Handbook of Texas says Fronton was founded in the late 1700s, first settled by Francisco Guerra, a pioneer of the Nuevo Santander colony, and first named San Francisco de las Playas by missionaries. Its present name came from a rock bank across the river called La Hacha, later known as Frontón. In 1939 residents organized the area's first cooperative irrigation system. Just downstream lies Fronton Island, an uninhabited island of about 160 acres in the river. Before the 2010 census, parts of the old CDP were split off as Guadalupe-Guerra, Sandoval and Sunset, which is why the official population shrank. Children here attend Roma ISD schools, with Emma Vera Elementary as the zoned elementary.

FM 650 has carried travelers longer than most roads in the county; Col. William S. Fisher came through on it in 1842 during the Mier expedition. By about 1990 the Handbook counted a Catholic mission church and several stores here, with the town ringed by irrigated fields.

Moisture-related services we handle in Fronton

These are the jobs that come up most in a humid river setting.

Is a 25-minute trip from Rio Grande City quick enough?

For most problems, yes. The drive runs straight through Roma, so we can often get there the same day when the schedule allows. Tell us whether water is leaking, the indoor head is blinking, or the outdoor unit is silent. We bring drain flush tools, a wet-dry vacuum, float switches, capacitors and a coil cleaning kit. For drains, we clear the line, add a cleanout if there is none, and show you where it is. For ductless units, see how a mini-split deep cleaning works, and read about AC drain line and water leak repair if water is your main problem.

What do Fronton homeowners ask about damp air and AC?

Why does my AC drain keep clogging in Fronton?

Your system pulls a lot of water out of humid river air, and that water feeds algae and bacterial slime in the drain trap. Once it builds up, the line backs into the pan or overflows. A proper flush, a cleanout fitting and a float switch that shuts the system off before it floods are the usual fixes. Along FM 650 a spring drain treatment is worth planning.

Why does the mini-split in my Fronton house smell musty?

Usually because mold and slime are growing on the coil and blower wheel inside the indoor head. Fronton sits on the riverbank across from the Ciudad Miguel Alemán area, and that damp air keeps the inside of a ductless unit wet long after it shuts off. A deep cleaning with a drain bag washes the wheel and coil in place, and a dry or fan cycle at the end of the day helps keep it clean.

Is a whole-home dehumidifier worth it in a small house?

Sometimes. If the rooms feel clammy even when the thermostat is satisfied, or you smell must in closets, a dehumidifier tied into the ductwork can help. In a ductless home, a properly sized mini-split with a dry mode may be enough. We check the system and humidity first, then tell you which way makes sense. Homes on Fronton's low river ground tend to feel that damp air more than houses up on the US-83 side of Roma.
