West Alto Bonito sits north of La Grulla, about 14 miles from our shop in Rio Grande City, roughly a 25-minute drive, and we serve it throughout. It was the first part of the area on the census map, counted simply as Alto Bonito in 2000. Today it is full of owner-built concrete block homes, many of them still growing. A family finishes the main rooms, moves in, and adds a bedroom or a second living area a year or two later. That way of building fits mini-split installation perfectly, because ductless heads can be added room by room, just like the house.
What do growing block homes in West Alto Bonito need from us?
Most West Alto Bonito work combines planning, installation and some building help.

Mini-Split Installation in West Alto Bonito
West Alto Bonito homes averaged more than four people per household at the 2000 Census, and as families add bedrooms to block houses, a ductless head can go into each new room the year it is finished.

AC Installation in West Alto Bonito
Once a West Alto Bonito home is finished and has a real attic space, a ducted central system sized by load calculation can cool it instead of several heads; we price both so you can compare.

AC Condenser Pads in West Alto Bonito
Every outdoor unit needs a level base on the caliche lot. Pouring the condenser pad during slab work for an addition saves a second concrete trip and keeps the unit clear of rain runoff.

Mini-Split Cleaning in West Alto Bonito
Cutting block and mixing mortar beside a lived-in room throws fine cement and caliche dust into the air, and a running mini-split head pulls it into its filters and coil. A deep clean restores the airflow.

Planning cooling in stages, from open block to a finished room
The easiest install is the one planned before the plaster goes on. If you call us while an addition is still bare block, the technician marks where each head should hang, usually high on an inside wall with a clear path for air. We then plan where the line set will pass through, often a sleeve set in the block, and where the condensate drain will run so it slopes properly to the outside.
Outdoor units need thought too. A multi-zone condenser can feed several heads, so a family can buy one outdoor unit sized for the finished house and add heads as rooms are completed. Each unit sits on its own level concrete condenser pad and gets a disconnect within sight.
For larger homes with a proper attic, a ducted central system through new construction HVAC may make more sense than several heads. We lay out both options with the trade-offs.

Get DirectionsOwner-built block, new refrigerants and winter cold snaps
Block homes are tough and fire-resistant, but they soak up heat on summer afternoons and release it at night, so a bedroom with a west wall can stay warm long after sunset. Rooms built at different times also end up with different window sizes and ceiling heights, which is why we size each head for its own room instead of guessing.
The 2000 count found 153 housing units and a median age of 20, a young place with big families. Houses keep growing with them, a bedroom or a block-walled porch at a time, and each change shifts the cooling load. A head sized for the original living room can fall short once a new kitchen opens onto it, so we recheck it then.
Equipment is changing too. Starting in 2025, new home systems shifted away from R-410A toward R-454B, R-32 and similar lower-GWP refrigerants, so a family adding heads over several years should plan around equipment that will stay supported. Heat-pump mini-splits also heat in winter, a useful backup in a cold snap like the February 2021 freeze, as long as the power stays on.

Questions West Alto Bonito families ask while building?
Can you plan the AC while I'm still building my home in West Alto Bonito?
Yes, and it is the best time. While the block walls are going up we can mark head locations, leave sleeves for the line sets, plan the condensate drain path and choose where each outdoor unit and pad will go. That avoids core-drilling finished walls later and keeps the lines neat. Bring us in when the floor plan is set, even if you will finish rooms over several years. On a West Alto Bonito lot we also mark a pad spot on the caliche, clear of the next planned room.
How many mini-split heads will my new block home need?
Usually one per room that you want cooled separately, such as bedrooms and the main living area, but it depends on room sizes, windows and how the rooms connect. An open kitchen and living area may share one larger head. We size each room and can design a multi-zone outdoor unit now with space to add heads as new rooms are finished. Households here averaged about 4.45 people at the 2000 Census, so plan for every bedroom you expect to add, not only the ones standing today.
Do you run the electrical disconnect for new mini-splits?
Every outdoor unit needs a disconnect within sight so it can be shut off safely. We install the disconnect and the whip to the condenser as part of a mini-split job. If your panel has no room or a new circuit has to be run from it, that part may require a licensed electrician, and we will tell you before the work is scheduled. In a West Alto Bonito house that grew room by room, we count the panel's free spaces before quoting.
