Yes, our crew comes to Granjeno, close to an hour's drive from Rio Grande City. With fewer than 300 residents on about a third of a square mile, it's a very small city, set where FM 494 meets Old Military Road on the banks of the Rio Grande, roughly four miles southwest of McAllen.
Being that close to the river shapes the cooling work. Outdoor units sit on low, flood-prone ground, storms knock out power, and coils fill with dust and plant debris. Most of what we do here protects equipment from those conditions.
Living beside the levee: Granjeno's flood-prone lots and outdoor units
Granjeno's relationship with the river is unusual. In 2008 and 2009 the old earthen levee was rebuilt as a taller concrete levee wall about two miles long, with a sheer 18-foot face on the Mexico side, according to Associated Press reporting at the time. Building it into the levee meant families kept their homes.
The levee guards against the river, but rain is another matter. Water from a heavy storm still collects on flat lots, and a condenser sitting on a thin slab can end up with water in its base pan and electrical compartment. Hurricane Hanna's downpours in July 2020 flooded parts of Hidalgo County and were a reminder of how fast that happens.
Humidity is the other constant. The neighboring Anzalduas County Park is known for its moss-covered trees, a sign of how damp the air stays along this bend of the river. That moisture keeps condensate drains wet and slimy, and the brush around town, including the granjeno, or spiny hackberry, that gave the city its name, sheds leaves and seeds into condenser coils. Keeping a clear foot or two around the outdoor unit helps it breathe.

That's why we often recommend a taller AC condenser pad for homes here. Concrete work is one of our trades, so the pad and the AC reconnection can be handled by the same crew.

AC Maintenance in Granjeno
Coils here collect dust and plant debris from open ground, and a yearly wash keeps the unit blowing cold. Brush along the river edge, including the spiny granjeno shrub the city is named for, drops leaves into fins.

A city this small means each visit is planned as its own stop, so we ask more questions on the phone. Did the unit quit during or after a storm? Is the indoor fan running? Has water reached the outdoor unit? Those answers decide which parts ride along. Phones are staffed six days a week until 7 PM, and cash and major cards are accepted.

On site the technician checks the breaker and disconnect, tests the capacitor and contactor, inspects the outdoor wiring for water or rodent damage, then measures refrigerant pressures once the unit runs safely. If it quit after an outage, our guide to storm and power surge AC repair explains what usually fails. A coil wash finishes most maintenance visits.

Old cemetery, Anzalduas and Hidalgo ISD: Granjeno's landmarks
Granjeno is older than its city charter suggests. The Handbook of Texas dates the Granjeño Cemetery to 1872, with burials from both sides of the river, and Our Lady of Fatima Church was established in 1954. Colonia growth in the 1960s added more homes, and Granjeno was incorporated as a city on January 26, 1993. The city sits next to Anzalduas County Park, close to the Anzalduas International Bridge that opened in late 2009, and its students attend Hidalgo ISD schools: Salinas Elementary, Ida Diaz Jr. High and Hidalgo Early College High School. The 2020 Census counted 89 households in 97 homes, with about one resident in eight aged 65 or older.

Get DirectionsWhat do Granjeno residents ask about river-side AC care?
The levee protects Granjeno now. Do I still need a raised condenser pad?
The levee holds back the river in a flood, but it does nothing about rain that falls on your own lot. Granjeno sits at about 108 feet on flat river ground, so storm water has few places to go. Heavy storms can still leave water standing around an outdoor unit set on a thin or sunken pad. If you have seen puddles reach the base of your condenser, raising it is worth considering.
Will you drive out from Rio Grande City for one small house in Granjeno?
Yes. Granjeno is close to an hour from our office, and we fit calls here into our Hidalgo County routes. The whole city counted just 97 homes in 2020, and every one of them is in our service area. Give us a description of the problem when you call so the technician can bring likely parts, which makes a one-trip repair more likely.
My AC will not restart after a power outage in Granjeno. What should I check first?
Check the thermostat screen and the indoor and outdoor breakers, then wait about five minutes before trying again, since many systems hold a restart delay. If a breaker trips twice, leave it off. Storm outages along the river here often come with surges, which can knock out a capacitor or control board, so tell us whether the outage came with lightning or water near the unit.
