Los Ebanos sits on the Rio Grande about three miles south of Sullivan City on FM 886, a 24-mile trip from our Rio Grande City shop that usually takes about 30 minutes. It had 239 residents at the 2020 census. Its homes are small and close to the river bottom, and that location shapes almost every air conditioning call we get here: condensate drains that clog in humid weather, outdoor units on low pads that sit in water after a storm, and cabinets that rust from the ground up.

The ferry, the ebony trees and St. Michael's

The community takes its name from the Texas ebony, and an ebony tree anchors the cable of the Los Ebanos ferry, a hand-operated crossing to Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Tamaulipas. Recent reporting describes it as the last hand-pulled ferry still working the Rio Grande. Crews pull it across by hand, and it can stop running when weather turns or the river rises. History runs deep here too: a La Joya city history notes that Texas Rangers crossed into Mexico at Los Ebanos in 1874 while chasing alleged cattle rustlers. St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church is another familiar landmark. The Census Bureau first listed Los Ebanos as its own place in 2000, and the whole community covers little more than half a square mile at about 141 feet above sea level. Children here attend La Joya ISD, from Sam Fordyce Elementary up to La Joya High School.

Services that fit the river bottom

These seven cover the moisture, storm and heat problems we see most on FM 886.

AC Drain Line & Water Leak Repair in Los Ebanos

Damp air near the river means more condensate and more slime in the drain. In Los Ebanos homes near the ferry landing, we flush drains from both ends and check the float switch.

Raising the condenser keeps it out of standing water when low ground floods. Lots on the river bottom along FM 886 sit near 141 feet, and rain pools quickly on that flat ground.

Wet ground and humidity wear out electrical parts and fan motors in outdoor units. A rusted contactor or swollen capacitor is the usual finding when a Los Ebanos unit hums but will not start.

After a storm, a condenser that sat in water needs checking before it runs again. Hurricane Hanna in 2020 showed how fast heavy rain can put a riverside unit under water.

A yearly visit catches rust on the base rail and a slow drain before either becomes a breakdown. On this damp ground, that check pays off more than it would in drier towns up the highway.

Low pads, wet ground and rusting cabinets

A condenser needs to breathe, drain and stay dry underneath. On low ground near the river, heavy rain leaves water standing around the pad for days. Hurricane Hanna in July 2020 showed how much rain this part of the Valley can take at once. When water reaches the cabinet, it soaks the base rail and can get into the electrical compartment. A taller concrete condenser pad keeps it out of reach.

A taller pad lifts the condenser above ground that stays wet after heavy rain.

Humid air also loads the inside of the system. The evaporator pulls water from the air all day, and if the drain line grows slime, that water ends up in the pan or on the floor. Regular drain line and water leak repair stops the overflow before ceilings and cabinets get damaged.

The people inside matter as much as the equipment. The community has been shrinking, from 403 residents in 2000 to 239 in 2020, and the 2000 count found one in five residents aged 65 or older, some of them living alone. A system that quits in August is a health risk in those homes, not just an inconvenience. If someone shows confusion or faintness in the heat, call 911 first.

What happens when we come down FM 886 for a call?

Tell us whether the problem is water, no cooling or storm damage, and whether the unit has been under water. The technician checks the electrical compartment for moisture first, then the contactor, capacitor and fan motor. Drains are flushed from both ends. If the pad is too low or cracked, we measure for a new one, which can often be poured and the condenser reset on a later visit once the concrete has cured. Our line rings from 8 in the morning until 7 at night, six days a week, and the short run from Rio Grande City makes Los Ebanos one of our quicker stops.

Flood and moisture questions from Los Ebanos?

Our condenser sat in standing water after a storm. Can we turn it back on?

Not yet. Water can reach the electrical compartment, the fan motor and the compressor terminals. Leave the breaker off and have the unit inspected, dried and tested first. Starting it wet can short a part that would otherwise have survived. Los Ebanos is only about 30 minutes from our shop by FM 886 and US-83, so an inspection after a storm is usually a short wait.

How high should the condenser pad be on low ground?

High enough to sit above the water you have seen in the yard after heavy rain, while staying level and solid. Los Ebanos sits low on the river bottom, around 141 feet, so many yards here need a taller pad than the thin slab most units ship with. We look at where water collects, the line set length and the electrical whip before forming a new pad.

Is rust on the bottom of the outdoor unit a problem?

It becomes one. Surface rust on the base rail is a warning, but once it spreads to the coil or the electrical box, leaks and failures follow. In Los Ebanos, where the river keeps the air damp and the ground stays wet after heavy rain, rust tends to start sooner than on higher ground. Raising the unit and keeping the coil clean slows it down.
