Sullivan City lies off US-83 and FM 886, about a mile east of the Starr County line. That makes it the first Hidalgo County city a driver reaches heading east from Rio Grande City, and our crew covers the 22 miles in about 30 minutes. With roughly 3,900 residents, it is a real town with neighborhoods, colonias on its edges and steady demand for cooling. Because we come in from the west, Sullivan City calls do not wait behind traffic across McAllen, Mission and Palmview.
How does a repair call from our side of the county line work?
You call, describe the symptoms, and we ask a few questions: Is the outdoor fan spinning? Is the indoor blower running? Any ice on the copper lines? Those answers tell the technician which parts to load. If the day is not fully booked, the technician may be at your door that afternoon.
On arrival, the technician checks power, the thermostat, the capacitor and contactor, then refrigerant pressures and airflow. You hear what failed and what it costs before work begins. If the system is too far gone, you get a straight comparison of repair against AC replacement.

AC Maintenance in Sullivan City
A spring tune-up before the US-83 heat sets in catches the weak capacitor or dirty coil early, which matters in a town where much of the housing dates to the 1990s boom.

The Handbook of Texas says the townsite was part of Ed W. Sullivan's ranch and became a loading station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1927. By 1930 it had about 250 residents, a post office and fifteen businesses. A colonia called Rodriguez later grew up outside the city. FM 886 still runs south from town about three miles to the Los Ebanos ferry. Most students attend La Joya ISD campuses such as Rosendo Benavides Elementary and Lorenzo de Zavala Middle, while areas just west fall under Rio Grande City CISD.

The town has grown from a railroad stop to almost 4,000 people, and like much of western Hidalgo County its housing mixes older frame houses, block homes and manufactured homes on outlying lots. Many systems run hard from spring into fall, and summer afternoons push them past their limits. Capacitors weaken, contactor points pit and fan motors seize, usually in the hottest week of the year rather than in April. Storms add to the wear: during Hurricane Hanna, an NWS gauge about three miles south of town logged 14.59 inches in 72 hours ending July 28, 2020, and flooded disconnects need checking before restart. Units that are fifteen or more years old may still run on R-22, a refrigerant whose US production ended in 2020 and whose remaining supply is reclaimed or stockpiled. Major leaks on those systems often point toward a new central AC installation or a ductless upgrade instead.
The timing of the town's growth explains why so many units are that old. Sullivan City went from 2,371 residents in 1990 to 3,998 in 2000, then held nearly flat through 2020, when it counted 3,908 people in 1,143 households. Much of the housing went up in that one decade, so the equipment in it has aged together. The population is also older than in many neighbors: the 2020 median age was 31.9, and people 65 and up made up 13.3 percent of the town. Houses with grandparents at home are where a dead AC turns into a health problem fastest.

What do Sullivan City residents ask before booking?
Can you come the same day in Sullivan City?
Often, yes, when the schedule allows. The drive is about 22 miles and roughly 30 minutes from our shop. A morning call gives us the best chance. Tell us what the system is doing, and we will give you an honest arrival window rather than a promise we cannot keep.
Do you also serve homes outside the city limits?
Yes. Neighborhoods and colonias on the edges of town, along FM 886 and toward the county line are part of the same trip. Give us the address or a nearby cross street when you call. The 2020 Census classed all of Sullivan City as rural, and we plan our route the same way for addresses inside and outside the limits.
Our AC was installed in the 1990s. Is it still worth repairing?
Sometimes, but look hard first. Sullivan City added more than 1,600 residents in the 1990s, and systems from that wave may still run on R-22, which is no longer produced in the US. A capacitor or contactor is a fair repair on any unit. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor on an R-22 system usually makes replacement the better use of the money.
